mbaIn Nepal, most of the universities offer MBA course in their graduate level. In order to be eligible in MBA program, every university conducts their own test which is similar to GMAT test format. In their test, Group discussion, Presentation, Case Analysis and Personal Interview are included for final selection. Mainly, in Nepal, Kathmandu University takes KUMAT for MBA, similarly, Tribhuvan University test is called SOMAT. Likewise, Pokhara University and Purbanchal University conduct their own test.

SOMAT Test Format

exams-bannerSOM shall conduct a four stage admission tests for appropriate screening of applicants. The applicants shall be screened in each of the stages.

  1. Written test: This test will be based on the GMAT format. The duration of the test will be 2 hours.
  2. Group discussion: Groups discuss on a given topic. Performance of applicants is recorded by a panel of judges based on leadership, logic, and conclusions.
  3. Individual presentation: Applicants present their views and opinions on a given topic to the panel of judges.
  4. Personal interview: Personal interview to measure applicants motivation level, attitude and capability to handle the pressure and rigors of the MBA program

KUMAT Test Format

test2It is based on GMAT format.

KUMAT consists of two sections:

  1. Verbal comprehension which comprise of three papers ( sentence correction, critical reasoning and reading comprehension).
  2. Quantitative Aptitude which comprise of three papers (problem solving, data sufficiency and logical reasoning).

-Personal interview and other selection measures

-The test shall consists of multiple choice items only.

Eligibility criteria is:

Nepali and non- Nepali nationals with a Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent of at least three years duration in any discipline with a minimum of 50% in aggregate or 2.5 CGPA on a scale of 4 from universities recognized are eligible to apply for Two-Year MBA program.

My final year results are not out. Can I apply?
If you have completed the qualifying educational level, you can apply on provisional basis, provided you have already taken the final year/ semester examination and passed all previous year/ semester examinations. However, even after admission, if you fail to meet MBA eligibility requirement, your admission will be cancelled.

Those applying on a provisional basis should have secured minimum 50% or CGPA of 2.5 in his/ her previous year/ semester examination.

What is the structure of MBA admission test?
The admission test consists of two phases-


  • Personal interview and other selection measures
  • Applicants who are successful in the TEST will be called for second phase.

Can I submit the filled application form online?
No, you cannot submit the application form online. You need to submit the application form at reception desk.

What is admission test fee?
The total admission test fee is Rs. 1000. You are required to pay Rs. 300 while taking the application form and Rs. 700 while submitting the application form. If you download the application form, you need to pay Rs. 1000 while you submit the application form.

Can someone else submit the application form for me?
Yes, anyone can submit the application form, but the application form should be properly filled and with required documents should be submitted.

When do I need to submit applicant’s evaluation forms?
In the application form, you just need to mention the names and other details of the evaluators. Whereas, you need to bring applicant’s evaluation forms filled by the evaluators during second phase of admission process.

What needs to be done after submitting application forms?
After submitting the application forms, you need to do the following:

  • Check if you are on list of applicants selected for test.
  • Collect admit card for TEST and note date and time of your TEST.
  • Sit for the TEST on the date and time specified.
  • Check if you are through the first phase.
  • Attend the second phase on allocated date and time.
  • Please refer the MBA admission calendar for the date and time of the activities.

Is there any weight age of previous performance?
The result of admission test will be based on your performance on the TEST and your performance on previous academic degrees.

Is standard GMAT score accepted?
University admission committee may accept your valid standard GMAT score as a substitute for TEST.

When will the result be published?
The date of publication of results is given in the MBA admission calendar.

Can I check status online?
The list of applicants selected will be published in the website

How long the TEST score be valid?
The test score will be valid for the admission season only. You need to go through the admission process again for the next batch of admission.

What is the score one should earn to get through?
The score that will earn eligibility is subject to the overall performance of the group. Based on the score of all applicants, the admission and examination committee at TEST will decide the cut off range for selection.

Are calculators allowed?
Calculators are not allowed in the TEST

Is there negative scoring system?
There is system of negative scoring. For each wrong answer, your 0.25 marks will be deducted. That means four wrong answers is neutralized one correct answer.

Is there any limit of repetition/ trial?
There is no limit to the number of trial one can attempt before getting admission to the program.

When will be the next admission test?
MBA admission takes place twice a year:

  • Spring term (FEB)-starts admission process from November.
  • Fall term (Sept)- start admission process from June.

What is duration of TEST?
Duration of written test is 2 – 2.5 hrs.
